Random Music Review 1

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

This is intended to be a series, like many other things that didn’t pan out. But it’s different this time.

“Maniac Mansion-Michael” by The OneUps
from The OneUps Volume 1

The OneUps are tons of fun, and the album is no exception. It’s classy and groovy enough that I can play it before demonstrations at work and only the nerds I work with realize that it’s totally an album of video game music remixes. I like that. People don’t seem to think video game music is real music. Though that’s getting better. Sure, it’s not as popular as <insert crappy pop artist name here> but whatever. The masses want something catchy, not something awesome.

Anyway, this is one of my favorite songs on the album. It has this feeling I’ll just call the “cool seventies” feel. It’s like Michael is actually Huggy Bear from Starsky and Hutch and he’s running around with some fly outfit, his camera, and a magnificent car. There’s no real introduction; instead, this cuts right to the chase and starts busting a groove right off the bat. Then in the middle we hit a whole bunch of spiffy arrangements. Then at 1:30 it breaks down and mellows out, like it just got home from a hard day’s work and it’s having a couple drinks. But no need to give up. It starts building back up at 1:45 to get back to the main theme around 2:20.

I love this song. It’s absolutely groovy.
